Ingredients:

For Baked “Fried” Onions:

  • 1 large onion
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled)
  • 3/4 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tablespoon milk

For Green Bean Casserole:

  • 1 Tablespoon + 1 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, rinsed, trimmed, and halved
  • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced into halves or quarters
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (minced roasted garlic is great here)
  • 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 and 1/4 cups half-and-half

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Preheat and Prepare:

  • Preheat the oven to 475°F (246°C).
  • Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Set aside.

2. For Baked “Fried” Onions:

  • Thinly slice the onion, separating the slices.
  • In separate bowls, place flour, Panko + salt + pepper, and whisked egg + milk.
  • Coat onion slices by dipping them in flour, then egg mixture, and finally Panko. Place on the baking sheet.
  • Bake onions until golden brown, approximately 25 minutes, flipping them twice. Set aside.

3. Reduce Oven Temperature:

  • Reduce oven temperature to 400°F (204°C).

4. Blanch Green Beans:

  • Bring a gallon of water and 1 Tablespoon of salt to a boil in a large saucepan.
  • Add green beans and blanch for 5 minutes. Drain and place in a bowl of ice water to stop cooking. Drain again and set aside.

5. For Green Bean Casserole:

  • In a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter. Add mushrooms, 1 teaspoon salt, and pepper. Cook until mushrooms release moisture (about 5 minutes).
  • Add garlic, stir, and cook for another 2 minutes. Sprinkle flour on top and stir until combined.
  • Add chicken broth, simmer for 3 minutes, then decrease heat to medium-low and add half-and-half. Cook until the mixture thickens (about 10 minutes or more for a thicker sauce).

6. Combine and Bake:

  • Remove from heat and add 1/4 of the onions and all of the green beans. Stir to combine.
  • Top with remaining onions and bake until bubbly, about 10-15 minutes.

7. Serve:

  • Remove from the oven and serve warm.

Expert Tips and Tricks:

  1. Make it Crispy: For extra crispiness, let the “Fried” Onions cool slightly on the baking sheet before placing them on the casserole. This ensures they maintain their delightful crunch.
  2. Freshness is Key: Opt for fresh green beans for the best texture and flavor. Their vibrant color and crispness will elevate your casserole to new heights.
  3. Mushroom Magic: Experiment with different mushroom varieties like shiitake or oyster for a unique twist in flavor. You’ll be amazed at the depth they add to the dish.
  4. Creamy Consistency: Stir the mushroom sauce consistently to achieve a velvety-smooth texture. No one wants lumps in their creamy casserole!
  5. Make-Ahead Friendly: Prepare the components (onions, beans, and sauce) a day in advance and assemble just before baking for a stress-free holiday meal.
  6. Cheese Lover’s Delight: Sprinkle your favorite cheese on top before baking for an indulgent cheesy crust.
  7. Herb Infusion: Add a dash of fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary to the mushroom sauce for a fragrant and earthy aroma.
  8. Nutty Crunch: Mix chopped nuts like almonds or pecans into the Panko coating for an added layer of crunch and flavor.
  9. Caramelized Onion Twist: Caramelize the onions for a sweet and savory dimension. It takes a bit longer but oh, is it worth it!
  10. Bacon Bliss: Everything’s better with bacon! Crumble some crispy bacon on top for a smoky kick.

What to Serve It With:

  1. Roast Turkey: A classic pairing for the ultimate holiday feast.
  2. Honey Glazed Ham: The sweet and savory ham complements the casserole perfectly.
  3. Herb-Roasted Chicken: A versatile choice that lets the casserole shine.
  4. Prime Rib Roast: For an extravagant holiday dinner experience.
  5. Salmon Fillets: A lighter option with a burst of freshness.
  6. Stuffed Acorn Squash: Ideal for a vegetarian-friendly holiday meal.
  7. Lamb Chops: Elegant and flavorful, making for a sophisticated pairing.
  8. Pork Tenderloin: A juicy and tender option that won’t disappoint.
  9. Beef Wellington: Elevate your meal with this classic beef dish.
  10. Vegetable Lasagna: A comforting and hearty choice for vegetarians.
