Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Pat the chicken thighs dry with paper towels. Season both sides of each thigh with salt and pepper.
In a small bowl, mix together garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper to create a spice rub.
Sprinkle the spice rub evenly over both sides of the chicken thighs, rubbing it in to ensure even coating.
Set a wire rack inside a baking sheet to allow air circulation around the chicken during baking. Heat olive oil in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the chicken thighs, skin-side down, for 3-4 minutes until the skin is golden brown. This step is optional but adds extra flavor.
Brush a generous amount of barbecue sauce over each chicken thigh, coating them evenly.
If you used a skillet for searing, transfer the chicken thighs to the wire rack on the baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
Optionally, baste the chicken with more barbecue sauce halfway through the cooking time.
Use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken has reached a safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
Once cooked, remove the chicken from the oven. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley, if desired.
Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving to allow the juices to redistribute.
Serve the BBQ chicken thighs with your favorite sides and enjoy your delicious oven-baked barbecue chicken!
