Ingredients

  • 1 pound (16 oz) block of mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Marinara sauce, for dipping

Instructions

  • Start by cutting your block of mozzarella cheese into sticks. Aim for about 1/2 inch wide and 3-4 inches long. This size is perfect for achieving that gooey melt without the cheese spilling out during frying.
  • You’ll need three separate shallow bowls for this part:Flour Mixture: In one bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, 1 teaspoon of dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. Mix well.Egg Wash: In another bowl, beat 2 large eggs until well combined.Breadcrumb Mixture: In a third bowl, mix 1 cup of breadcrumbs with 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese.
  • Dredge: Start by dredging each cheese stick in the flour mixture. Ensure the stick is fully coated and shake off any excess flour.Dip: Next, dip the floured cheese stick into the egg wash. Allow any excess egg to drip off.Coat: Finally, coat the cheese stick with the breadcrumb mixture. Press gently to make sure the breadcrumbs stick well.
  • For an even crunchier exterior, repeat the process: dredge the cheese stick in the egg wash again and then coat it with breadcrumbs for a second time.
  • Place the coated cheese sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze them for at least 30 minutes. Freezing helps the cheese hold its shape during frying and prevents it from melting out too quickly.
  • In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is hot enough for frying.
  • Carefully add a few cheese sticks to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 1-2 minutes, or until the sticks are golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove the sticks and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Serve your fried mozzarella sticks hot with marinara sauce for dipping. Enjoy the crispy, golden coating and the deliciously gooey cheese inside!
