Homemade Pretzel Bites

Cost: $

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 1 1/2 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 4 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

For Boiling:

  • 10 cup water
  • 2/3 cup baking soda

For Topping:

  • Coarse salt, to taste

For Dipping (Optional):

  • Mustard, cheese sauce, or your favorite dip

Instructions

  • In a bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil in a large pot. Meanwhile, punch down the risen dough and divide it into small sections. Roll each section into a rope and cut into bite-sized pieces.
  • Drop the pretzel bites into the boiling water and baking soda mixture for about 20-30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Sprinkle the pretzel bites with coarse salt while they are still wet from boiling.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the pretzel bites are golden brown.
  • Allow the pretzel bites to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm, and dip into your favorite mustard, cheese sauce, or any preferred dip.
