Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs. top sirloin steak, thinly sliced into 2” strips
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 cups (12 oz.) broccoli florets, chopped into bite-size pieces

Sauce:

  • 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
  • 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup oyster sauce
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons Japanese rice wine or dry sherry
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1-3 teaspoons Asian chili sauce (such as sambal oelek)
  • 4-6 cloves garlic, minced (or 1-1 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder)
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger (or 1 teaspoon ground ginger)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Step-by-Step Guide:

Pat dry the sliced beef strips with paper towels and toss with ½ teaspoon salt. Set aside.
In the slow cooker, combine all sauce ingredients and whisk until the cornstarch dissolves. Add the beef to the sauce and stir to combine.

Cover and cook on LOW for 3-4 hours until the beef is tender.
Once the beef is tender, tilt the slow cooker to the side and transfer as much sauce as possible into a saucepan using an oven mitt. Set aside.

Add broccoli on top of the beef in the slow cooker, covering it without stirring to allow the broccoli to steam. Cook for an additional 20-30 minutes until the broccoli is crisp-tender.

Meanwhile, simmer the sauce on the stove until thickened to a desired consistency.
Transfer the thickened sauce back to the slow cooker and stir to combine with the beef and broccoli.
Serve with rice and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions if desired. Enjoy!

Expert Tips and Tricks:

  • For extra flavor, marinate the beef in the sauce for 30 minutes to 1 hour before cooking.
  • Don’t overcrowd the slow cooker. Make sure there’s enough space for the ingredients to cook evenly.
  • Adjust the level of Asian chili sauce according to your spice preference.
  • To save time, prep the ingredients the night before and refrigerate them until ready to cook.
