Key Ingredients

Baked Beans
Baked beans are the heart of this dip. They bring sweetness, body, and that classic cookout flavor that makes this appetizer feel familiar.

Ground Beef
Ground beef makes the dip hearty and gives it a savory base. Browning it first helps build flavor before the beans and sauce go in.

Bacon
Bacon adds smoky flavor, crisp texture, and richness. Some gets mixed into the dip, and the rest goes on top for a crunchy finish.

BBQ Sauce
BBQ sauce ties everything together with smoky, sweet, and tangy flavor. Use a sauce you already like because it becomes one of the main flavors in the dip.

Cheddar and Monterey Jack Cheese
Cheddar gives the dip bold, sharp flavor while Monterey Jack melts smooth and creamy. Together, they make the dip rich, cheesy, and perfect for scooping.

How to Make Southern BBQ Baked Bean Dip

Step 1: Cook the Bacon and Beef
Preheat your oven to 375°F. Add the chopped bacon to a large oven-safe skillet and cook over medium heat until crisp. Remove the bacon and set it aside, leaving a thin layer of bacon grease in the skillet. Add the ground beef and cook until browned and at least 160°F, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess grease as needed.

Step 2: Build the Flavor Base
Add the diced onion to the beef and cook until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant. This step gives the dip a stronger savory base before the sweet and smoky ingredients go in.

Step 3: Add the Beans and Sauce
Stir in the baked beans, BBQ sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne if using. Let everything simmer for 5–7 minutes so the flavors come together and the mixture thickens slightly.

Step 4: Add Cheese and Bake
Stir in half of the cooked bacon and the cheddar reserved for the filling. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese over the top. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the dip reaches 165°F. Finish with the remaining bacon and sliced green onions, then serve hot with tortilla chips, corn chips, or toasted bread.

Tips & Tricks

Use thick-cut bacon for the best smoky flavor and texture.

Let the bean mixture simmer before adding the cheese so the dip does not turn loose or watery.

Use an oven-safe skillet, like cast iron, so you can cook and bake everything in the same pan.

Taste your BBQ sauce first. If it is already very sweet, you can reduce the brown sugar slightly.

For a thicker dip, bake it a few extra minutes uncovered until the edges bubble and tighten up.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices bacon chopped
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 cans baked beans 28 oz each
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper optional
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese divided
  • ½ cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 2 green onions sliced
  • Tortilla chips corn chips, or toasted bread, for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F. Add the chopped bacon to a large oven-safe skillet and cook over medium heat until crisp. Remove the bacon from the skillet and place it on a paper towel-lined plate. Leave about 1 tablespoon of bacon grease in the skillet.
  • Add the ground beef to the same skillet and cook over medium heat until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain off any excess grease if needed. Cook ground beef to 160°F; color alone does not establish safe doneness.
  • Stir in the diced onion and cook for 2–3 minutes, or until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
  • Add the baked beans, BBQ sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper if using. Stir until everything is well combined.
  • Let the mixture simmer for 5–7 minutes so the sauce thickens slightly and the flavors come together.
  • Stir in half of the cooked bacon and 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Mix until the cheese starts to melt into the bean mixture.
  • Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup cheddar cheese and the Monterey Jack cheese evenly over the top. Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Check the center of the assembled dip reaches 165°F.
  • Remove from the oven and top with the remaining crispy bacon and sliced green onions. Serve hot with tortilla chips, corn chips, or toasted bread.

Notes

  • Drain excess grease after browning the bacon and beef, keeping only the bacon fat needed for the onion; this prevents an oily dip.
  • Use a thick barbecue sauce and undrained baked beans, then simmer until spoonable before adding the cheese topping.
  • For less heat, leave out the optional cayenne. Serve with sturdy chips or toasted bread, and keep hot dip at 140°F or above during service.
Estimated nutrition: Per one-eighth dip recipe, generic baked beans with pork, 80/20 beef and eight standard raw bacon slices; all raw meat fat conservatively included although some grease is drained. Chips, bread and optional cayenne excluded. Total sugar is not reported because it is unavailable in the baked-bean reference.

Make-Ahead, Storage and Reheating

Cook the meat and filling fully before making the dip ahead. Cool promptly in shallow containers, refrigerate, and add the cheese topping before baking. A chilled filling will take longer to reach 165°F.

Divide leftovers into shallow containers and refrigerate within 2 hours, or within 1 hour when the temperature is above 90°F. Keep at 40°F or below and use within 3–4 days.

Reheat the dip until it reaches 165°F throughout, adding a little broth if needed. Cover portions in the microwave and stir or rotate for even heating. See USDA’s leftover food-safety guidance for safe cooling and reheating.
